Summer somehow always feels like it’s going to last forever — and then suddenly it’s September.
This summer was a little different for me. I wasn’t as consistent with the blog, I wasn’t sticking to every routine perfectly, and a lot of the things I normally make time for ended up taking a back seat.
And honestly, I’m okay with that.
Earlier this year, I shared a lot of my slower seasonal routines through my Slow Spring Living series, but this reset feels a little different. It’s less about creating a new routine and more about settling back into the parts of life I missed.
Summer has a way of changing the pace of everything. The days are longer, weekends fill up quickly, schedules get less predictable, and sometimes you just want to enjoy what’s happening instead of constantly thinking about what you should be doing next.
But now that September is here, I can feel myself craving a little more structure again.
Not a complete life overhaul. Not a strict new schedule.
Just a slower, more intentional reset before fall really begins.
I’m Letting Summer Be Summer
One thing I’m trying not to do this year is treat September like I need to make up for everything I didn’t do over the summer.
I didn’t post on the blog as much as I planned to.
Some weeks were more organized than others.
There were definitely meals that weren’t planned, workouts that got skipped, and weekends where productivity was the last thing on my mind.
But I also had a summer.
And I think there’s something important about allowing a season to be what it was without immediately turning it into a list of things you could have done better.
So instead of looking at September as a restart, I’m thinking of it more as a transition.
A chance to take what worked this summer, leave behind what didn’t, and slowly create a rhythm that feels good again.
Clearing Out the Summer Clutter
Before I start pulling out fall decor or buying anything new, I always feel the need to clear things out first.
By the end of summer, little things seem to collect everywhere — random bags by the door, half-used products, summer shoes, beach things, outdoor items, and those small piles that somehow become part of the scenery.
I’ve been focusing on a few areas that make the biggest difference without turning it into an all-day cleaning project.
My kitchen counters.
The refrigerator.
My closet.
The entryway.
And my coffee area, of course.
I don’t need everything to look perfect, but having a few spaces feel clean and calm instantly makes home feel more settled.
It also makes adding those first little touches of fall feel much more intentional.
Getting Out of “I’ll Figure It Out Later” Mode
Summer makes me very good at saying, “I’ll figure it out later.”
What are we eating for dinner?
I’ll figure it out later.
What do I need to get done this week?
I’ll figure it out later.
When am I going to work on the blog?
Later.
It works for a while — until suddenly everything feels like it needs to be figured out at the same time.
So this month, I’m trying to get a few things out of my head and onto paper again.
Or, in my case, into my digital planner.

I recently created a digital planner because I wanted one place where I could keep track of my schedule, goals, meals, projects and all of the little things that are easy to forget when life gets busy.
I don’t want planning to become another chore. I just want to spend a few minutes looking ahead so I’m not constantly reacting to the week as it happens.
Even planning three dinners, writing down a few priorities and knowing what my weekends look like makes such a difference.

Simplifying What I’m Eating
I’m also very ready to move away from the random summer meal phase.
I love eating out, grabbing something while we’re out, or putting together an easy dinner when it’s hot outside, but by September I always start wanting real meals again.
Not complicated meals — just meals that feel a little more put together.
I’ve been thinking about meals in categories instead of trying to plan something completely different every night.
A bowl night.

A sheet pan dinner.
Something in the slow cooker.
A pasta or grain bowl.
And one night where we either go out or use whatever is already in the fridge.
It makes grocery shopping easier, and it takes away some of the mental effort that comes with asking “what should we eat?” every single day.
This is also the time of year when I start wanting meals that are still fresh but a little more comforting.
My High Protein Greek Bowl and Hot Honey Chicken Bowl are two of my favorite easy meals for this in-between season when I still want something fresh but a little more filling. These are perfect for in-between seasons when it’s technically still warm outside but fall is starting to creep in.
Making Home Feel Different Without Fully Decorating Yet
I’m not ready to go full fall the second September starts.

I still like that early September feeling where summer is technically hanging on, but the mornings feel cooler and you can tell the season is beginning to change.
Instead of completely decorating, I like making small swaps first.
A cozy throw on the couch.
A candle in a warmer scent.
Fresh flowers that feel a little more seasonal.
A heavier blanket on the bed.
A few warmer-toned kitchen or coffee-bar details.
It gives the house that first hint of fall without rushing the season.
And honestly, I think I enjoy decorating more when I do it gradually.

Making Space for Things I Actually Missed
The biggest part of my September reset isn’t really about cleaning, planning or being productive.
It’s about noticing what I missed.
I missed working on my blog consistently.
I missed having ideas written down instead of floating around in my head.
I missed making coffee at home and actually sitting down to enjoy it.
I missed cooking a little more intentionally.
I missed quiet evenings where I wasn’t trying to squeeze five more things into the day.
Those are the things I want to bring back first.
Not because they belong on some perfect fall routine checklist, but because they genuinely make my life feel better.
I’m Choosing a Few Priorities for Fall
I’ve learned that whenever I make a huge seasonal to-do list, I end up feeling behind before the season even really starts.
So this year, I’m keeping my fall priorities simple.
I want to be more consistent with the blog.
I want to cook at home more often during the week.
I want to have slower weekends when I can.
I want to spend more time outside before it gets too cold.
And I want to enjoy the season without feeling like I have to turn every part of it into content, a project or something productive.
If those things happen, I’ll consider it a pretty successful fall.
Starting Again Without Starting Over
September always feels like a fresh start to me, but I’m realizing that a fresh start doesn’t have to mean starting from zero.
Sometimes it just means paying attention again.
Cleaning up a few spaces.
Writing things down.
Cooking a real dinner.
Picking up a project you care about.
Making plans for the season ahead.
And slowly settling back into the parts of life that make you feel most like yourself.
That’s really what my September reset looks like this year.
Nothing dramatic.
Just a few small changes, a little more intention, and a lot of excitement for the cozy months ahead. 🍂
